Most wallets are made of leather. Among all materials used in making wallets, leather definitely stands out. In fact, the very first wallets in history were made of leather. Wallets came into being right after paper currency was introduced in the West. This was in the seventeenth century. In fact, the very first paper currency, which came before leather mens wallets but not by much, was made of corn paper in 1690 in the Massachusetts Bay colony. Before that, the only currency used were coins and leather pouches were what the people used to store them in. These early leather wallets came from cow or horse skin and had a small pouch for calling cards.
