Tarot Reading: The Secrets of the Major Arcana

TarotSecret symbolism in the Major Arcana cards is best deciphered by those possessing a spiritual understanding

The deck of tarot cards is made up of seventy eight cards.  Each card is unique in what it represents generally and what it represents when it appears in combination with other cards.  Of the seventy eight cards in the deck, twenty two of the cards make up what is called the “major arcana”.  An Arcanum is a special knowledge and understanding in an area of mystery.  The major arcanum in tarot cards refers to the cards that have special significance to the reading because they help the reader identify strong issues, people or feelings within the individual circumstances of each person who seeks an answer through a tarot reading.

The major arcana cards depict The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, The Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement and The World.

Judge not!

When you get your tarot cards read, I advise you to be careful about making your own judgement about what the major arcana cards you have selected mean in your reading.  If you have selected a card such as The Empress for example, you should not assume this card necessarily represents you or that has anything to do with worldly riches.  Let your reader decipher this for you based on the other aspects of the reading.  I also suggest that you let the reader take their time.  One card’s meaning may not be entirely obvious to the reader until other cards have been examined.  You must let this process unfold to get the best reading that you can use for guidance.

The major arcana cards all depict scenes that lend to the symbolic understanding of the situation by the reader of the cards.  Examples of such symbols that appear in the cards are water, metals, and animals.  A theme of water among many of the cards you select may or may not symbolize something meaningful in your reading.

Spiritual guidance

I always advise those seeking a tarot card reading to seek out an experienced reader who has some kind of spiritual or psychic understanding as well because they are the readers who will have the most insight into any symbolism occurring within the major arcana.  Now, I do believe that those well versed in the meanings of the cards and their placements can offer a good tarot reading that will be accurate in meaning.  What I want to emphasize though, is that a spiritual person will often pick up the very subtle threads of symbolism between the cards that another reader will not.  The spirituality of the reader may in effect become as much a tool as the cards in this sense and together the most detailed reading can occur.  I believe this is the very best combination for a reading that can aid in resolution or promptly needed action in the person who is seeking advice.

These secret symbols within the major arcane are shrouded in mystery because they are not overtly visible.  I like to describe the reading as a story that is woven together into a fabric.  The fibres that are used to weave this fabric are unique every time.  The major arcana cards that are selected, the placement of those cards, the strands of symbolism within the cards along with the spiritual understanding the reader lends to the mix bring the picture together in order to enlighten those who seek to know.

Don’t be in control

I strongly recommend that you do not get too involved in learning the symbolism of every picture in the major arcana.  The reason for this may sound a little confusing, but the reality is that the same card can mean many different things.  A good example is the Death card.  The death card rarely signifies impending doom.  Depending on where the card is placed and what other major arcana cards are in the reading, it can mean anything from a welcome end to a bad situation to an actual death.  I would really like to caution everyone that they should not panic if they see the Death card appear in their reading.  Let your reader unravel its meaning based on its interconnections and the underlying symbolism they see in your cards.

There are more secrets than you can imagine within the major arcana tarot cards.  Because the relationships between all the cards and the symbolism that is apparent in differing levels as well as the unique circumstances of your life, each secret message that the cards hold for you will be entirely different than for anyone else.  These messages are meant for your guidance and need not be understood by anyone but you.
